Clippy was Microsoft Office's overeager assistant (1997-2007) who popped up to ask if you were writing a letter. BonziBuddy was a chirpy purple cartoon gorilla that lived on your desktop from 1999, telling jokes and reading web pages aloud — before everyone learned it was adware. Two of the friendliest faces the pre-broadband PC ever forced on us.
