Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970) led Egypt's 1952 revolution and nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, becoming the icon of pan-Arab nationalism. Anwar Sadat (1918-1981) launched the 1973 war and then signed the Camp David peace accords with Israel, winning the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize before his assassination in 1981.
