Lech Walesa (born 1943) led Poland's Solidarity movement, the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc, won the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize, and became Poland's first freely elected President in 1990. Vaclav Havel (1936-2011) was a dissident playwright who led Czechoslovakia's 1989 Velvet Revolution and served as the last President of Czechoslovakia and the first President of the Czech Republic.
